Time Stoppers!
Published: Volume 19, Issue 5, May, 2011
Tracking seconds with detailed precision, these timekeepers are a seamless fusion of beauty and technology. Verve handpicks some of the marvels showcased at the World Watch and Jewellery Show at Baselworld 2011, Switzerland

From Queen Marie-Antoinette of France to Empress Josephine to the Marquise de Condorcet, Breguet watches have always charmed women. The Reine de Naples watch, created as a tribute to the wristwatch that Caroline Murat, the Queen of Naples, ordered from Abraham-Louis Breguet, is no exception. Its soft ovoid shape, crown at four o’clock and distinctive strap lug have made it a truly iconic timekeeper. It is available in a number of versions but is showcased here in 18kt red gold with hours and minutes. The dial in silvered 18kt gold, hand-engraved on a rose engine, individually numbered and signed Breguet, with inserts in natural white mother-of-pearl, is a sure-fire time-stopper. The shining diamonds and the black satin strap add their own class to a watch beyond compare.

Pushing the limits of a watchmaker’s art, a tourbillon carriage, crafted from sapphire crystal, is enclosed in a red-gold case. The eight-shaped ring applied to the Grand Feu enamelled dial strikes a harmonious balance between cutting-edge technical performance and a taste for simplicity. The Roman numerals and the beautifully tapered hands bespeak elegance. A masterpiece of precision watchmaking.

In 1976, an original expression of horological creativity revolutionised the watchmaking world, when Happy Diamonds gave a twist to the theme of diamond-set watches. During a stroll, Chopard designer Ronald Kurowski marvelled at the sight of a waterfall: the drops of water reflecting the sunlight shimmered like diamonds. This vision sparked his idea of enabling diamonds to shine brightly by freeing them from their retaining claw settings and enabling them to move about. The Happy Diamonds watch series has a dial topped by two sapphire crystal plates with free-spinning diamonds dancing between them.

This bold incarnation of a feminine classic, in its 34mm Everose gold case, enriches the collection. Around the bezel, sparkle 12 brilliant-cut diamonds, elegantly showcased in 18kt white gold settings. The effect is luminous, exquisite, enchanting. The waterproof chronometer equipped with a Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanical movement is a trusted companion under all circumstances. The delicate Goldust Dream is a subtle, refined marriage of white or black mother-of-pearl and gold dust. The slightest ray of light illuminates this magical dial. Go dazzle the world!

It’s fashion versus art in this limited edition 38mm automatic movement calibre ‘Dior Inversé’. The white gold functional oscillating weight on the dial and the black mother-of-pearl dial are embellished with diamonds. The black ceramic case and bracelet, fashioned from pyramid-shaped links look chic. The diamonds spin with every movement making it look like sequins on a twirling couture dress. Divine.

Make the world a prettier place with this watch that looks like a piece of jewellery, straight out of a classic movie. This contemporary interpretation of the brand’s famous icon has an 18kt pink gold case, set with round brilliant-cut diamonds and a black opaline dial. The guilloche soleil treatment and the two-twirls bracelet exude patient craftsmanship. The sparkling masterpiece hugs the wrist and fits like a second skin. Bold and refined.

The alluring exteriors carefully hide a revolutionary, accurate and durable automatic movement. The fluid design, based on the abstract concept of a wave and a white ceramic ring, represents modern women. While the 18kt white gold Super-LumiNova-coated hands and the briolette-cut diamond at the crown look stunning, the bracelet featuring Omega’s patented screw-and-pin design, gives it a classic look. Dramatically eye-catching.

Bring out the wild cat from your wardrobe! The leopard print dial – with eight yellow diamond bezel-settings – looks classic. Equipped with an automatic chronograph movement, the 41mm bezel satin-finished red gold watch set with 48 andalusites, smoked quartz and baguette citrine is a surefire bet to win over the uber chic fashionistas!

This elegant watch is for the sporty-chic. The eye-catching dial conveys a streamlined spirit that reminds us of the speedometer of a racing car. Solid, reliable and perfectly finished, the quality of the finishing of the watch and the fine DeWitt rotor can be observed through the sapphire crystal back. By blending 18kt rose gold with tantalum, the classically bold design looks like an unconventional combination of styles but with a stunning effect!

This subtly elegant collection asserts its urbane strength of character and sits well on any wrist. With three hands and a date window, a visible balance wheel and bezel with diamonds dancing gracefully to time’s music, each watch looks classic. The opalescent dial, faultlessly elegant blue hands and the dark brown leather strap contrast flawlessly with the polished finishes of its steel case. Studied perfection.

With its distinctive titanium case and horizontal baguette movement, the limited edition watch is a contemporary interpretation of the spirit behind Golden Bridge. The choice of material, combined with a manufacturing process similar to electroforming, results in parts with more precise tolerances. The hour and minute hands and the power-reserve display are coated in a luminescent substance. A fine balance between design and technology.

Innovative technology combines with classic elegance in the brand’s new model in the successful Patrovi EvoTec range. It is the first model which – while being based on the extremely resistant and reliable CFB A1000 Manufacture caliber – has a round case. The calfskin strap, available in black or brown, enhances its style quotient. It is meant for elegantly sporty men and self-assured, independent women.

Tag Heuer
As TAG Heuer revisits its past to build the future, the new Monza chronograph celebrates the golden age of HEUER and the aesthetic codes of the 1970s. It will be available in a limited edition of 1,911 pieces (to commemorate the famous ‘Time of Trip’ dashboard chronograph of 1911). But, this is no mere replica or retro edition. Technologically, it sets its own trend in the world of time. Completely contemporary and timeless!

Add a touch of sporty elegance to your style with this glittering model. Set with 120 diamonds around the bezel combined with the brilliant strength of ceramic, the dynamic beauty of the watch echoes the fine balance between performance and elegance. The two new precious variants of the G-Frame watch, designed by creative director Frida Giannini, are formal and yet simultaneously completely feminine. In one, the dial adorned with elegant hands and the Gucci name at 12 o’clock, the fine stainless steel bracelet that comes with a Gucci brown mirrored dial spell class, anytime. The G-Frame is also available with a full pavé diamond dial. For the evening it can be paired with a black lizard strap. Wear it for its wow effect.

The watchmaker’s first analogue perpetual calendar spells modernity with whispers of vintage. Powered by a G15.561 movement with a battery end-of-life indicator, the perpetual calendar facility will operate without any adjustment necessary for the entire 21st century. The guilloche decoration and a gently curved case, complete its elegant appearance. The seamless combination of beautiful design and unrivalled technical expertise exemplifies innovation.

The beauty of its crafted appearance and the total purity of its lingering sound are striking. Seiko’s elegant new masterpiece is also a practical watch. Technologically, the spring drive measures time silently with no tick and the ingenious ‘silent governor’ impeccably controls the speed of the striking gongs. A perfect timepiece that is a joy to wear.

In a serious, sober and function-driven design, the watch is crafted with materials of the highest calibre. The fluidity and dynamism are apparent in the lyre-shaped elongated watch horns. The lacquered black dial with three Arabic numerals and the soft leather or classic bracelet in three-link steel look stunning. A distinctively modern twist.

As its name suggests, it is a find to buy and keep forever. It is modelled after a split pebble and the smooth crystalline face of the dial’s case, bisected by a leather strap or a smooth bracelet. Nickel polished hands sit delicately atop the dial that features the iconic CK logo. The metal bracelet and the leather straps are stylishly alluring. Lustrous and extremely polished.

Create your own haute effect with vibrant summer hues. In a stroke of genius, you can mix and match the interchangeable straps and bracelets. Housing the quartz movements, some with off-centre sweep second subdials and jewelled with Wesselton diamonds on the case and bezel, along with sapphire crystals, the watch is a sheer classic. Luxury and timelessness, all in one!
