Say No to Nude

Colour is back and how! Transcending the shades of monochrome, it’s time to look at life through a kaleidoscope, says Sohini Datta

Make-up this summer has taken an imaginative turn. Leaping into other realms, rules have been broken and new ones have been made. Elements from the past are fondly remembered as glamour takes the steering wheel. It is now going on a turbo-charged speed straight out of the roads of tradition into the skies of glamour and colour.

So it looks like Alice and her Wonderland have worked their magic on us, Warhol-like disco glam is back in the palette as we carefully push the nudes aside. Maybe, in a way it is an expression of the very nature of make-up itself. For isn’t make-up essentially a bit whimsical, a little magical, bringing out our inner child every time we face the mirror with a brush in our hand?

Ask M.A.C as they collaborate with Wonder Woman for the summer season. They have banished Plain Jain and invited us to a trip in Paradise Island with a line up of super-sized Mineralize Skinfinish, bold eye shadow quads, lipsticks and oversized lip gloss amidst others. Dashing and dazzling, the iconic heroine reminds us that inside every woman is a mighty Aphrodite full of courage, confidence and charisma. Kaboom! M.A.C’s very own Vimi Joshi says, “Make-up is extremely personal. Be fun and experimental with it!”

The war paint this summer is on-your-face, larger-than-life, just the way women in the earlier decades liked it.

Back in the time of Louis XIV, courtesans used saffron and flower pollen to make their faces colourful. And in 18th century Europe, men and women alike went to great lengths to appear almost distorted, whitening their faces and using blue colour to touch up their vein lines!

Not as dramatic but just as much glamorous is Lancôme’s Spring/Summer 2011 Ultra Lavande collection. Getting ecolicious for the first time, Lancôme and Aaron de Mey dream the disco dreams and reignite the ’70s spirit in this collection. Think disco balls, Studio 54, Warhol and dance-away nights. The woman they paint is a romantic hippie by day losing herself to lavender hues, and a disco diva by night. The lipsticks look like bits of a disco ball, the delicate textures, vibrant shades, sparkling shimmer... Lancôme’s first range of mineral make-up asks you to come out and play!

Let your inner child run free and take the paint box out for the summer. Lakmé’s summer Fantasy Collection speaks of glossy finishes, glitter and shimmer, aqua greens, floral mid tones – all inspired by nature. As Lakmé make-up expert Clint Fernandes said, “For me, the inspiration has been fairy tales – the vivid colours, the shimmery feel and sparkling effect. We have captured these elements in our collection in a manner that makes the colours and textures viable for everyday use as well as for special occasions.”

Maybe it isn’t about everyday make-up anymore. It is about popping the nights, going beyond your comfort zone…daring yourself to try a new hot shade. Whether it’s fairy tales or pop art or just Wonder Woman, the temperatures are rising in a myriad shades this summer!
