Countering the 1950s volume is the ’90s column

Narrow minded

The long, straight skirt returns to the runways. These are longer than the sexy secretary length, and not all of them are of the cinched waist, hip-skimming, restricted-step variety. There is more room in some, while others stick to the ‘pencil’ definition. Drawstring waists, slightly billowing hips and wider hem girths offer more room and freedom and are reminiscent of 1990s grunge. Calf-length, checkered versions are hippy casual, sometimes lungi/ sarong style. Slim satin columns with sexy side slits transport you to an evening in Shanghai. Arty to sporty, assertive to careless – time to set things straight.

Elle et ink

Indigo, navy, ultramarine, midnight, steel, cobalt, ink, Persian and Yale arrive. Wear the shades of the summer night sky. Tie-dye, batik, ombré and ink-stain effects are very hippy grunge. Denim in various weights is always welcome – a shirtdress and a kurta in the fabric are this summer’s must-haves. Layer lightly and combine with other neutrals or even brights. Or go all blue. The feel is relaxed; the effect is soothing. The heat cannot touch you. You are the coolest.
