Snooze it!

It’s time to give your alarm clock and morning café a holiday and invite the sandman in, says Sohini Datta

It’s 2am and you are finally back home. Of course, you needed to paint the town in rainbow colours; your make-up is off and it’s time to hit the pillow which feels like dropping into the creamy icing sugar of a cupcake. The BlackBerry beeps, an urgent tweet that you just have to reply to and before you know it, it’s 3 am and you need to be at work by nine!

Life without sleep is often made up of endless years of morning caffeine shots, under-eye creams, unconditional hair fall, unbelievable weight gain and ugly dark circles and this is just the half the trouble.

Of course what follow are not midnight tweets but serious medical issues like heart attacks, heart failures, strokes, obesity, psychiatric problems and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). So do everything you can to cure your insomnia. Your health depends on it!

Must-dos:

  • Shut that phone off. Look, you have the iPhone and are-available-24/7 but as long as you are not the President of a war-torn country, you don’t need to be connected in the middle of the night.
  • Some people find the sound of white noise or nature sounds, such as the ocean or forest, sleep-inducing. The best part about it; there are tons of iPhone apps which help you out with these sounds.
  • Avoid before-bed snacks, particularly grains and sugars. Sugar is satanic, so no chocolate after dinner. This will raise blood sugar and inhibit sleep. Later, when blood sugar levels drop too low (hypoglycemia), you might wake up and not be able to fall back asleep.
  • Sleep in complete darkness. If there is even the tiniest bit of light in the room it can disrupt your circadian rhythm. Unless one is really wary of ghosts and other goblins, there is no need for night lights.
  • No TV right before bed. Get the TV out of the bedroom because it is too stimulating to the brain and it will take longer to fall asleep. This also means everything else that is graphically stimulating.
