Naturally Dramatic
Published: Volume 18, Issue 5, May, 2010
Spring-Summer is that time of the year when all things become gentle and soft. Make-up and hair, as we saw on the fashion ramps at the Lakmé Fashion Week, veered towards the natural. So, just follow the wave!

Doe-eyed mystery
Fall’s classic smoky eyes (a combination of black liner and dark shadow) are still with us. Thank god for the eternal need to add mystery to already pretty eyes! This season though, tune it down a little. Pair these eyes with nude lips and subtler looks instead. Try Lakmé's line of Enrich Lip colours enriched with strawberries and peach extracts.

The fashion weeks had a mix of dark and bold eyes and even bright streaks of oranges, greens and blues. Choose from Lakmé's new quartet of vivid eyeshadow powders and tone them down with a black or grey. Remember to apply it only to your upper eyelids.

The naked and the beautiful
The fashion weeks were about the fresh-faced and the luminous this season. We saw models looking their natural best in shades of pinks, corals and sheers. It is the time to bring out the sheer powder foundations, tinted moisturisers and other such light products. For the soft, almost natural look that we seek, try and use light, earthy shades. On your cheeks apply your blush with long but gentle strokes, upwards across your cheekbones, creating a slightly rosy look.

Outline your lips with a lip pencil, preferably with a slightly darker shade of pink; then fill them in with a baby pink gloss. Blend well. For best results, use Lakme's Aquashine lip colours infused with jojoba.

Spring it up
The ’60s are back in the human mane world, twisting and braiding their way in, chunked up with colourful accessories. Look out for pretty-meets-punk accessories from bows and barrettes to large, exotic flower pins…and don’t forget the flirty hats and hair bands! Help them inject the correct amount of spring-mood in your wardrobe and fix a bad hair day. Think Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s hippy girls on the runway and imagine what wonders a simple handkerchief can create.

Textures and waves
“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair,” said the Prince. “I can’t…I am crimping it for the party tonight,” replied Rapunzel.

Even Rapunzel knows that soft waves and textures is the way to go this season. You can achieve these soft curls by just putting on rollers and waiting for a few hours. This will also give your hair the much-needed break from all the heat-blasting that you are probably used to. “Textured hair is a rage this season. For people with straight hair, crimping, and curling is the in thing right now. If you already have curly hair, then adding a curl jam or anti-frizz would be effective,” advises hair and make-up artist, Clint Fernandes.

Pull it back
Go on, surprise the world, make your friends pass you by. After all, the showering of compliments is worth the confusion. The simplest and shortest route to an instant makeover is a change in hair style. The runway displayed some fabulous romantic chignons, top knots, messy buns and wispy braids. Some of them were slicked back clean and tight, whilst some were messy and tousled. None of the dos were really elaborate or time consuming.

To get the look, you need washed and conditioned hair, oodles of hairspray, a tail-comb and some pins or a hair tie. “The distressed Bohemian braid is probably the simplest one to do at home. After washing your hair, condition it well, dry it and then begin twisting and turning your tresses. Start out loosely in the beginning and tighten it towards the end. Throw the braid over one shoulder and let it sit there. If it’s too tight, loosen it with your fingers so it gives an easy, and casual look,” suggests make-up and hair stylist, Raika Vaswani.
