Staying cool – but looking hot – is the name of the game this summer. Rishika Roopchand tells you how to be the radiant belle...

The most important thing we need to remember while travelling this season is to keep everything simple and light. This rule applies to almost everything; packing, eating and most importantly— wearing make-up!

Cleansing, toning and moisturising are a must while travelling but the most important skincare item is sun-block. It is required at all times; it is criminal to leave home without applying at least an SPF factor of 15 or higher because even though sunlight feels good, the rays are actually the biggest enemy of our skin.

Be prepared
Hot summer is also not the weather for us to try and pile on make-up or experiment with elaborate hair styles. “The most important thing we need to remember before setting out on our vacation is to be totally prepared. We need to be extremely well hydrated, especially if we have a long flight ahead of us. It is as important to drink a lot of water for our face as it is for the rest of our body. Apply make-up before a long flight only if you really need to. Carrying facial wipes to remove your make-up would be a good idea as well as moisturising your skin well for the rest of your journey. Before you land you should apply a lot of sun-block as well as moisturiser,” advises, make-up expert, Mehera Kolah.

Beach breeze
If you are going to spend a long day on the beach you need to take extra care and pay attention to your skin and hair. The beach is another place you should also try applying as little make-up as possible, as the direct heat from the sun causes your make-up to melt and run down your face. Streaking mascara looks terrible; so it is important to carefully choose your options – a water-proof mascara is great but requires an oil-based make-up remover so that you don’t get an unsightly build-up.

On a lovely summer’s day there is nothing better than the appearance of a healthy glow to make you look great, and one of the easiest ways of achieving this is with bronzing powder. Just applying a little bit along your cheekbones, can give you the perfect sun-kissed look you desire; provided you use the correct shade that matches your skin tone. Try and use a clear lip gloss or a light shade of pink lipstick and keep the rest of your make-up minimal.

There is nothing prettier than seeing long, lustrous hair while sitting on the beach but this comes with a little bit of work and effort. You have to be extremely cautious as the sun can be hard on your hair; extra conditioning would be advisable along with using products that are specially formulated with ingredients that offer protection against the summer sun. “Try GHD hair products as they have sun-block infused in them and protect your hair from getting bleached and damaged,” recommends hair and make-up expert, Kumar Iyer.

TRAVEL MUST-HAVES

• Evian facial mist • Tinted cheek and lip stains • Wet wipes • Sun-block • Smudge-proof kohl • Make-up remover

HOW TO APPLY SUNSCREEN CORRECTLY

• A minimum SPF of 15 to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. • The best way to apply sun-block would be to use an exfoliating scrub to remove all the dry and dead skin and then apply sunscreen 20 minutes before leaving the house so it gets totally absorbed by the skin. • After a dip in the pool or ocean, applying your sunscreen again is essential. • One should keep re-applying sunscreen every two hours as the effect wears off.

Team with tans

BARELY TANNED – STILL FAIR
A soft and subtle pink should complement your complexion the best. Try and avoid pink shades with blue undertones.

SLIGHTLY TANNED – OLIVE SKIN
Try and stick to rich, deep shades of pink as pale lipsticks can make you look ashen and washed out.

WELL TANNED – DARK SKIN
In this case you use shades of pink with blue undertones, which will help brighten up your skin.
