For Spring-Summer 2010, we seem to be getting bolder, brighter and stronger – yet we rewind to our past for inspiration. Rishika Roopchand takes you through this season’s must-have pieces, fresh off the runways of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) and Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW)

monochrome

Black-and-white always comes together as a winning team. It is crisp and elegant and works well both for formal, semi-formal, casual and dressy party ensembles. It all depends on how you carry it off! Gauri and Nainika used these predominantly for their Spring-Summer 2010 collection. Black sure is back, but this time black-and-white is the new black!

sequins

They were everywhere in the past Spring-Summer and everyone is wearing them again this winter. And now, they are being carried forward to Spring 2010 as well. The strobe lights are still on, so flaunt those disco dresses. The good news is that you can dig out some of last season’s buys, but just make sure you wear them differently. Shine on!

neons

Finally, a chance to brighten up your wardrobe. Shock value in measured doses, works, and how! Streaks of hot pink, acid yellow, flaming orange, electric blue and fluorescent green make us happy.

jumpsuits

They have ‘jumped’ back on the fashion radar and have become a preferable choice for savvy dressers. No longer only uniforms for astronauts; if sported with über-confidence, they can send us over the moon. These dare-to-try one-piece outfits come in different shapes and lengths; there is the playsuit, the romper and overalls.

big sleeves

The ’80s inspiration continues. Exaggerated sleeves are a rage, fashionably dramatising shirts, dresses and tops. Pair them with a pair of ripped jeans for a casual look or with a classic pencil skirt and pumps for a chic and formal avatar.

high collars

When Blair Waldorf of Gossip Girl fame wears high collars, you already know that this is a trend to take on board. This somewhat stern and puritanical look may not initially appeal to everyone but it is definitely worth a shot. The key is to not over accessorise.

zips

Zippers are usually meant for getting in and out of outfits, but 2010 brings us a different purpose for them; they can be stacked on collars, used for detachable sleeves, to embellish belts, shoes and handbags. Add a rock-and-roll sex appeal to your style.

reds

Red is the colour of power, passion and love. If Spring-Summer 2010 is all about making a statement, then the signature colour has to be red. Whether you team it up with other hues – bright gold, silver, black or white – or wear it on its own, is your call.

voluminous trousers

Harem pants, jodhpurs, bloomers, knickerbockers, dhoti drapes – the entire family is back in a nouveau version. The styles have been tweaked – sometimes with a narrow leg and extra loose hip, which may illusively seem like a skirt. These are a cross between skinny jeans and baggy pants, but work really well with anything, from a logo tee to crisp white shirts.

flared kurtas

We still love Madhubala in her long flowing anarkalis, which is why we have brought them back. The predominant shape of Indian wear for the past few seasons continues its voluminous trail through 2010. The anarkalis team well with skinny jeans, leggings or a churidar.

precision cutwork

Sometimes delicate, sometimes bold, sometimes softly curving, at other times jagged; this intricate and laborious technique goes well with both Indian and western clothes. Whether romantic, flirty, teasing or sharp – a subtle show of skin is sexy. Neeta Lulla’s lehenga skirt and Anamika Khanna’s jeans and jackets are stark contrasts.

fun prints

Abstract patterns and large scale floral motifs play a key role in this season’s print palette. A graphic touch, quirky elements and attractive colours work well on long flowing dresses, shirts, over-sized tees, accessories and even leggings.
