They’re the here. They’re the now. In our annual salute to New Age talent, Verve unveils the edgiest and brightest faces to watch out for this year

Charmi Gada Shah,
visual artist, 29

Hometown: Mumbai

So far: A Promising Artist award from Art India and VAG, IHC, National Scholarship for Young Artists, Department of Culture, Government of India, a host of other ones, a pocketful of exhibitions including the latest Art Expo, Mumbai – represented by Gallery BMB, Mumbai.

Inspiration: Making art is a passionate affair for me. Any form of art – books, films, architecture, fashion, a well-designed product that stimulates my senses – is inspiring.

Art as career: I always drew things when in school. As I grew older my interest in art became more embedded. The idea of being ‘autonomous’ was also an important thing into becoming what I am.

Artistic quest There is no particular point I desire to achieve. (There is no such thing as India’s Turner prize winner!) I want to grow in every possible aspect.

A day in the life: It starts at 7.00 am. I devote eight to nine hours to my work, followed by my sitar lessons. Late evenings I read, cook or attend art gatherings.

Artistic hero: Gordon Matta Clark.

One thing you would change about the art industry: The illiteracy within it.

Support system: Myself, family and friends

Currently reading: On Longing – Narratives of the Miniature.

Personal soundtrack: Ustad Vilayat Khan, Roy Orbison and a few rock bands.
