Clothes that hug you, or make you look taller. Magic? No, just winter

CHUNKY FUNKY

‘Where is the weather?’ one might ask. Barring the Northern dwellers, most of us Indians experience a blink-and-you-miss winter. But then, holiday travel enables us to have a feel of ‘brrrr’. Desi designers dish out some thick knits that envelop you in a warm hug. Cable motifs, a variety of wools, fuzzy textures and 3-d patterns remind you of grannies with their needles and patience. A jumper, a cardigan, a poncho, or even a soft jacket is a fashionable investment. For the more playful ones, there are mini dresses and quirky garment panels. Of course, we are nowhere close to international knitwear collections, but it is heartening to see that our designers are not ignoring this section of winter wear. The chunkier, the cooler…erm…warmer…okay, hauter.

ANKLE ALLURE

The lower calf and ankle seem to be the new erogenous zone this winter. Trousers are cropped or folded. Tights are cut off a tad short. Hemlines of maxi dresses are not quite floor length. Easy movement? You bet. Oh, and by the way, this also makes you look taller. Here, even the sari receives a lift, inspired by drapes of rural India and folk dancers. Whether you flash bare skin, or have contrasting, metallic, patterned or sheer tights/ leggings/ stockings as a cheeky detail, is your call. Maybe wear a chunky anklet. Footwear adds the final touch – sandals, strappy heels or booties determine whether you are bohemian, sexy or spunky today.
