Romantic and pretty, hair has never looked so alluring before, finds Faye Remedios

A Cut Above
“The cuts to opt for during February are ones which are more romantic and look good for Valentine’s Day,” says Christiaan Georgio of the Christiaan Georgio salon at the Grand Hyatt Plaza. A fringe looks trendy this season and accentuates the natural movement of hair. Jagori Pal Nayyer, regional technical manager, Wella India recommends a one-length cut with a fringe for straight hair and light layering with a block fringe for curly or wavy haired gals. Those with a long face should avoid short cuts as this accentuates the length of the face. Instead, go for a heavy fringe which appears to shorten the length of the face. For those who have a round face, layers on the sides make the face look narrow. Avoid a heavy fringe, which will only make the face look wider. Those with square faces can afford to be more experimental and accommodate both of the above styles, says Georgio. Straight hair also makes a comeback this season, says Placid Braganza, director, Nalini’s Salon and Academy.

Styled Perfect
Nayyer recommends a natural soft look for the day and a gorgeous scrunched or sleek look with lots of shine for the evening. “For the straight look, use Wella’s High Hair Sleek Wonder and for curly/wavy hair use the Touch And Feel spray. Finish the style with shine enhancing products like High Hair Gloss Serum or Pure Glamour,” she says.

To get ready for that special romantic February date, here are some legendary hairstyles from Georgio. Before you begin to dress up for that day of celebrating your ‘love’, divide your hair and apply rollers before putting on your make-up. When you have finished dressing up and are all set for the day, your hair would have dried off for the time required. The rollers can be now removed. Turn your hair upside down and lightly spray on the roots — just enough to give the right texture but at the same time not to create too much stiffness. Another timeless, classic hairstyle to make your Valentine dreamy or amorous is to apply large rollers allowing your hair to dry off for the time required. After the rollers are removed, take the hair in the crown section and pin it up behind the ears with bobby (flat) pins. Some hair would therefore be let loose down in curly sets and some held by the pins. “Simple, dapper and classy, that’s what makes this hair style extraordinary!” says Georgio. Carole Robequin, Salon Manager, Jean-Claude Biguine advises going in for a classically beautiful look with soft, bouncy curls like singer Rihanna’s. “Even hair accessories can be extremely useful, and small touches like rhinestone-encrusted hair pins can make your hairstyle even more romantic. For girls who want to portray their passion to their partner, try adding a pretty red rose (real or faux) in your hair to spice your style up a bit,” she advises.

Colour Craze
Hair colour is slowly moving towards more muted tones like chestnut, dark almond, ash browns, mahogany and deep purples. Each of these tones can be selected — according to one’s complexion — from two categories of warm and cool shades, says Braganza. “The natural look is back in fashion. I’d recommend shades from cool ash to brown tones. For those who want a makeover especially for Valentine’s Day, I’d recommend going in for vibrant shades like mahogany and violets from the family of reds. Don’t go in for a global colour but try a multi-tonal effect that can be achieved by blending natural tones in the hair,” says Nayyer. If you are going in for a bright hue like red, go for highlights; for global I would recommend darker colours like deep plum, dark violet shades, advises Shailesh Moolya, senior stylist, Juice.
