Varun Sardana quietly asserts himself as a designer of substance

The mop of curly hair and slight frame belie Varun Sardana’s powerhouse design talent. Despite his short tenure in the fashion world, the NIFT graduate and multiple award winner is making his presence felt with his distinct style. “My garments always aspire to escape the definitions that bind them,” says Varun, who does not believe in following global trends. Often drawing inspiration from “the boring and the mundane,” his creations display a surprising maturity and finesse, which go past concept and translate intelligent design into simply great garments. “My clothes are for confident men and women who are comfortable in their skin and not looking for external validation.” His obsession with detail and mastery over various forms of pleating have been apparent since his debut in 2007, and the recently showcased Spring Summer 2009 collection has only reinforced it. After hosting fashion-related shows on television, Varun is now exploring costume design for a crossover English feature film entitled For Real.
