Beauty guru Carole Robequin combines natural styling talent with a diehard passion for teaching, discovers Faye Remedios

As head of training at the Jean-Claude Biguine – House Of Beauty, Carole Robequin is responsible for formulating and rendering in-house guidance for stylists and trainers. Her biggest challenge is altering people’s perceptions about hair. But as she admits, it’s a small price to pay for someone who’s passionate about both hair and teaching. After getting the relevant diplomas in Paris and starting her career as a hairdresser and technician in French barber shops, Carole began training extensively. An avid travel buff, she loves exploring new cultures and their values. “The best part has been travelling all over and visiting different places. I am a very curious person and have visited places like France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Malaysia with this mindset” she smiles.

Indeed, she says she was attracted to the idea of joining Jean-Claude Biguine because they had set up operations in India, which was untouched geography for her. “I have worked in other Asian countries and have had a sense of Asian culture. India is a growing market that’s getting aligned to global fashion and styling. I had seen India in pictures, read about it in magazines and heard about the country from distant friends. It mesmerises me. So it was very exciting to get a chance to experience the place myself.”

The fact that Indian women have long, lustrous hair works perfectly for her. And the training process has been a breeze. “People here are very diligent and don’t have a mental block against practicing something international. They accept and adapt themselves to different types of practicing styles and are quick learners. The best part has been their willingness to embrace new learning and that is yielding fantastic results.” The response has been as terrific, too, with clients coming back for more. “As people are becoming more conscious of the need to be well groomed, it isn’t hard to sensitise them to the benefits of hair care.” Who’s her hair idol in India? “Bipasha Basu, definitely. I love her bob.”
