Kolkata designer, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, unveils his Spring/Summer ’09 collection at New York Fashion Week. HINA OOMER-AHMED reports from the front rows

Indian fashion’s blue eyed boy showed at New York’s fashion week for the third time. As the saying goes – third time’s a charm. And so it undoubtedly was for Sabyasachi Mukherjee. He seemed to have got it all just right this season. Flaunting his trademark rich textured fabrics and handmade prints, the Indian detailing paired with trendy western silhouettes seamlessly blended the traditional ingredients into an internationally appealing contemporary collection.

Showing to a packed house of veteran fashion journalists, buyers and stylists, the ‘Sanctuary’ collection flaunted ultra-mini scalloped skirts and dresses, dirndl skirts with cinched waists and flowy tulle sleeves. The designer’s fearless pairing of colour and fabrics were reminiscent of a vibrant canvas. No surprise then that his inspiration for the collection were the paintings of Emil Nolde and Paul Gaugin.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM
Style.com: ‘True to his word, the show was full of covetable separates, many with exquisite hand embroideries, quilting, and beading that could only be done in India, but have true global appeal.”
Women’s Wear Daily: ‘Breezy, and with a whiff of geeky librarian chic.’
Suzy Menkes, fashion editor,International Herald Tribune: ‘Sabyasachi Mukherjee is a rare Indian designer whose designs incorporate ethnic handwork yet translate into western style. Skirts made up of scalloped shapes, colourful buttons used as decoration to match a polka dot print, embroidery and beading were all used in moderation by the Kolkata-based designer.’
