Zubair Kirmani delights with his unconventional brand, Bounipun

The chinar leaf of Kashmir, which happens to be the mascot of Zubair Kirmani’s brand Bounipun, is as homegrown as the designer himself. His creations have no overt regional traits. But close scrutiny reveals motifs that recall the woodwork of Kashmiri flooring and rooftops, and the influence of geometrical patterns common in Kashmiri mosaics. His first love is natural fabrics and handloom. “My garments are subtle and retain the feel of handwork.” His casual chic personal style translates to his simple yet sophisticated designs. With a label as versatile and organic as its namesake, he has come a long way from drawing on T-shirts and designing his own clothes to showcasing at fashion weeks and being linked with Bloomingdales. “I need to be practical so I try and make what sells,” he admits. His immediate aspirations are closer to home, “I’m laying the groundwork for retailing products in Kashmir next fall.”
