Indian Idol finalist Monali Thakur rakes in the winnings with Race

This 23-year-old’s first steps were towards the musical instruments of her Bengali singer-actor father, Shakti Thakur. Pursuing her dream, Monali came to Mumbai to participate in Indian Idol 2. “The show taught me a lot. It was the first time I ever lost in a music competition,” she says. But she never let her confidence slip. Today she has two of the chart toppers of 2008 to her credit — Zara Zara Touch Me and Sexy Lady from the film Race. She initially had only one track in the film, but director duo Abbas-Mustan were so stumped by her voice, they gave her another one. “Race was a turning point in my life. I can’t thank Pritam da (music director Pritam) enough. He not only introduced me to a lot of people in the music industry but also gave me my first big break,” she says. She is eagerly waiting for the response to her peppy number in Jugaad and is busy with her first solo rock album.
