For her new album, British-Asian musician Amar Dhanjan looks homeward

At 16 she was featured on Talvin Singh’s cult album, Anokha Soundz of the Asian Underground and her first album Outside featured a production by Nitin Sawhney. Daughter of London-based bhangra singer Mangal Singh, Amar Dhanjan continued collaborating with artistes while developing a sound of her own. She appeared on Khaled’s album Kenza and her Hindi cover of The Power of Love called Sitam appeared on the soundtrack of Bend It Like Bekham in 2002. But the musician’s big break came when her demo tape landed in the lap of legendary hip-hop producer Timbaland. Her collaboration with Timbaland produced the track Bombay, featured on his hit album Shock Value. The British-Asian artiste is now busy putting the finishing touches on her Hindi album, which is out this summer. The album, which will feature some “well known American rappers” can be described as hip hop meets Mumbai. But the word fusion makes Amar cringe. “Fusion is when you take two or three things and mix them together whereas this feels quite natural.”
