Bikinis, bronzers and bare backs – the most eagerly awaited fashion season is here. Summer fashion is always more indulgent and infused with colourful creativity. This year international runways have turned out numerous trends, some practical, others completely fantastical. There is no real formula, no algorithm for that flawlessly fashion forward look. But there is always a method to the madness. Verve stops by the five major international fashion weeks and discovers there’s something for everyone in this season’s fashion forecast

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK
Key Trend: Safari

The mood in Bryant Park was utilitarian and the cuts more streamlined. Proenza Schouler’s show began with a short black dress topped off by a hemp waistcoat and a short vest. Following on were a number of looks with a vaguely military air, along with cavalry hats. The sharply tailored safari jacket was the highlight of the Michael Kors show while shorts with military pockets, short sleeve A-line dresses and belted waists dominated Donna Karan’s collection. The lines were straighter and the style much sportier compared to their European counterparts.

Key Pieces: A pair of jodhpurs, beige shirt with military
pockets and knee length boots.

Black ‘B’ Fendi belt, from Fendi; hexagonal warrior cuff, beige trenchcoat, studded warrior bag, all from Burberry; pink jodhpur pants, from Ghee Butter, at Bombay Electric; black bowler hat, at Nine West. All in Mumbai.

MILAN FASHION WEEK
Key Trend: Boho Chic

Comfort is in. So are frills and fringes. Think 70s bohemian all over again but with a touch of super glam. Milan Fashion Week saw Pucci’s kaleidoscopic printed kaftans, Prada’s flared trousers and Roberto Cavalli’s romantic lace dresses. Finally, the baroque- inspired Dolce & Gabbana runway show was the approving nod to the stylish hippie revival.

Key Pieces: Long floor sweeping dresses, smock tops, super wide bell bottoms and block wedges to complete the look.

Multi-panelled maxi dress, by Nikasha Tawadey; red bumble-bee sunglasses, from DVB, at Muse; coloured and gold thread bangles, by Jamini Ahluwalia; silver Kolhapuri wedges, at
Joy Shoes; `Weekender Pulp Jaune’ bag, from Louis Vuitton.
All in Mumbai.
