The Man’s World ARC Polo Championship with Deutsche Bank, held at Mumbai’s ARC Polo Ground, at Mahalaxmi Racecourse, proved to be an afternoon to remember. The social jet set mixed with riders and horse lovers to witness the first polo championship of the season. The keenly contested match which ended in a five goal draw, was preceded by a programme of show-jumping. Hosts Anuradha and Anand Mahindra and MW editor, N Radhakrishnan, greeted their high-profile guests, eager to get the show on the way. Designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed presented his new line which included a selection of animal prints, khakhis and sporty cuts. Models made an entry on the field on bikes and in cars and bravely faced the turf on tottering stilettos. Ever sporting, model Jesse Randhawa, cut a charming figure in silk leopard-print evening dress, slit up the thigh, billowing behind her as she rode across on a horse. Polo being the sport of kings, it seemed appropriate that royalty be represented here in the form of Princess Asha Raje Gaekwad of Baroda. Visiting director Shekhar Kapur rolled off the ball that kicked off the match. And what about the city’s social royalty? They were all there to watch and understand a game that is normally beyond their circuit. After the last horses had trotted off the course, the party continued as a jazz band played into the night.
