World cinema is Tannishtha Chatterjee’s oyster

Tannishtha Chatterjee is on a high. Her heart-rending portrayal of a submissive Muslim woman in Brick Lane, not only won her a BIFA (British Independent Film Awards) nomination in the best actress category, but also bagged her interesting international projects. The feisty performer, who is the lead in Oscar winning director Florian Gallenberger’s Shadows of Time, will be seen next in an Italian venture with Naseeruddin Shah and Ranvir Sheorey. The National School of Drama alumnus also makes an appearance in Bhoomi, a political drama set in Kashmir, Bihar and Assam. The chemistry graduate admires Dame Judy Dench, Zohra Sehgal and Madhuri Dixit and wants to work in Bollywood, which has an interesting form of impression. “Earlier women were depicted only in frivolous roles but today genres are changing and new themes are being explored. I want to work in meaningful films that challenge my calibre as an actor.”
