A hot spot for all that glitters, Curio Cottage is a veritable treasure trove of exquisite ornaments

A woman’s choice in jewellery is the greatest exterior window to her soul.
A weakness for gold hoops can reveal a yen for a gypsy lifestyle, while an ancient silver ring could symbolise a family’s history. Necklaces, pendants and bracelets do more than just adorn. They are talismans with secrets and stories of their own. Curio Cottage is a literal goldmine of such gems – step inside and your eyes race from chandelier earrings alive with rubies to pearl necklaces fit for a queen. The store, which specialises in gold, silver and stone jewellery, is run and owned by the founder’s grandson, Anand Bathija. Curio Cottage’s diverse repertoire also includes fashionable shoes and handbags.

A favourite destination during the festive season, Curio Cottage is resplendent with jewels of all colours and sizes. Bathija designs the pieces himself and many gems come from places as distant as Mexico and Afghanistan. Vibrant coral necklaces are displayed in sleek wooden and glass cases alongside equally stunning turquoise chokers. For those with a penchant for darker jewels, smoky topaz rings smoulder next to black onyx. Bathija is known for his eccentric pendants; jade Ganeshas and gold nuggets hang from modern, silver-link chains that bedeck many of Mumbai’s pretty young things. For those with a traditional bent, Curio Cottage has a large selection of ethnic necklaces and silver teapots, a reminder of the shop’s 45-year past. Turquoise Buddhas clasp sleek linen clutches that are well-suited for holiday and work alike.

The myriad of charms, beads and jewels are sure to inspire a creation of one’s own. This venerable jewelbox is located on Mahakavi Bhushan Marg in Colaba. Splurge away.
