Fashion Week Review
Text and Compilation by Nisha Jhangiani and Photographs by Gulshan Sachdeva

Despite a lukewarm overall showing, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WLIFW) Spring/Summer 2008 did produce some winners. Trends were sketchy: a whole lot of teeny shorts and hassle-free shifts, a predictably pure palette of whites sometimes interspersed with pops of colours and elegantly strewn patches of sparkling embroideries on airy fabrics. While we sorely missed favourites like Manish Arora, Cue, Anamika Khanna, Ashish Soni and Shantanu Goenka, the very buyable collections we have reviewed for you in the following pages did lift our spirits. Come February, one can snap up Shantanu-Nikhil’s slithering buttercup draped dress, Tarun Tahiliani’s jersey salwar pants, Ranna Gill’s coffee bean print bikini, Namrata Joshipura’s white sports jacket, Monisha Jaising’s rose embroidered mini, Falguni and Shane’s dove grey embroidered gown, Ravage’s 3D textured cut shirt, Pratap’s navy layered skirt, Fightercock’s jumper and flap pocket trousers, Varun Bahl’s green net blouse with silver sequinned collar and Rohit Bal’s cream chiffon rippled cape.
And there you have it, the perfect capsule summer resort wardrobe...

SHANTANU NIKHIL
Sunny, buttery yellows. A fine mix of voluminous, slinky and form-hugging silhouettes. Lively dresses and casually chic separates. Emphasis on the short length; sleek tanned legs are a must for these summery ensembles.

RANNA GILL
A top resort line with much-needed designer swimwear! Flattering, feminine details – boat necks, soft asymmetry, delicate cutwork, floaty columns. A tropical colour palette that’s perfect for Goa, Maldives and St Tropez.

TARUN TAHILIANI
Easy drapes; fluid, Grecian silhouettes. Warm summer tones with delicious additions like caramel, pistachio and rose. Linens, chiffons and nets allow for some elegant sensuality; apt for hot climes.

FIGHTERCOCK BY ABHISHEK GUPTA NANDITA BASU
Young, energetic, creative fashion. A sporty summer line for the truly chic. Itsy vests with wide legged lounge trousers hit the spot for a balmy day. Fightercock’s inspired take on the Indian Freedom Movement will be well appreciated by the sassy intellect.

ROHIT BAL
Demi-couture with volume…and more volume. A magical tweaking of fabricated ripples to create texture. Taupes and creams followed by the Turkish electric blue. Western silhouettes merge seamlessly with Indian techniques of bandhini, mokaish and tie-dye.
