Digital prints and an ode to a colour…dream images and distorted figures…changing landscapes and panoramic views.... Maria Louis spotlights the shows of the season
LOST
IN THE CITY
In Mumbai Metronomes, conceived by Tarana Khubchandani, the never-say-die city which has seen a startling transition after its change of name is the starting point for a host of artists who have come up with creative answers to the question: What does Bombay/Mumbai mean to you? Inspiration is drawn from the city’s sometimes laudable, sometimes lamentable responses to a variety of events, from the torrential downpour on July 26, 2005, to the bomb blasts last year, to the tragic murder of a young woman in broad daylight recently. The just-concluded show of strength at Museum Gallery, featuring Anant Joshi, Bose Krishnamachari, Chintan Upadhyay, Jyoti Basu, Prajakta Potnis and Riyas Komu to name a few, moves to a new space, Worli.
Showing at Art & Soul, Mumbai, until August 10.
PICK
OF THE LOT
Atul Bhalla was the dark horse at the 10th Oberoi Art Camp organised by Vibhuraj Kapoor at the Hilton Towers. We asked art historian and former director of the NGMA in Mumbai, Sarayu Doshi, to pick one of her favourite pieces from the camp. She named one of Bhalla’s works. “I found this digital print visually arresting, as he has photographed drains of elite buildings along Marine Drive but when his collage of images come together they give the impression of a slum, thereby making a telling social comment,” she said.
Showing at Gallery Beyond, Mumbai, from August 14 to September 8.
