Passionate About The Planet
Published: Volume 15, Issue 8, August, 2007
Fashion and conservation seem to have become stylish and contemporary bedfellows and no one proves this point more aptly than the face of Lancôme, Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann. The determined protector of the universe and promoter of things beautiful and stylish answers Verve’s questions with typical honesty...

This 24-year-old New Yorker has walked the runway for top brands like Alberta Ferretti, Bill Blass and Diane von Furstenberg flaunting designer togs and an impeccable lineage as the daughter of iconic actress Isabella Rossellini and granddaughter of the unmatched legend Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini. A student of politics, history and economics, this past summer, she spent the first half working on her debut advertising campaign for Lancôme and the second, as a volunteer in Africa at a world-renowned centre for elephant conservation. Passionate about the planet, she has introduced an environmentally conscious new programme to Lancôme to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

What are your favourite beauty tips or advice?
Less is more. Wearing too much make-up over a blemish, or putting on make-up when you’re not feeling well just draws more attention to you than you want. I love to wash my face with very hot water, then very cold water and follow that with a light moisturiser or toner. I then apply face cream with SPF in the day and night cream before bed.

How do you maintain that model figure?
I love bicycling, volleyball, hiking and running. I really love to walk in New York. I walk everywhere. I also like weight training. I have a great weight trainer who does a lot of fun ballet training with me. I do yoga less than I used to. I try to work out at least four times a week.
My taste has changed a lot recently. I used to love very sweet things, but now I am more into salty foods. I have suddenly switched from drinking coffee with milk to not doing so and not loving cheese as much and loving vegetables and sour things. I try to stay away from milk products and carbs, especially when I’m travelling. I also try to consume lots of fish, vegetables and water.

What activities do you do for relaxation and life balance?
I love to get lost! I love working and then taking two months off and doing something completely different from my normal routine like travelling. That is how I relax. I work, work, work and then I leave everything behind. When I come back it’s like starting all over again.

How do you define ‘beauty’?
I don’t think beauty is one particular thing. It is how you feel about yourself. It’s also confidence. I think the better you feel about yourself, the better you project yourself to people.
A beautiful woman is one who balances many things at once. Who can have a career, a home life, interests and hobbies. One who can balance all of that and still have time for herself.
