Young, funky and effervescent, they epitomise the spirit of Generation Next. With their unique mix of designer and street fashion, these veejays delight in being different.

Anusha Dandekar
MTV veejay, Anusha Dandekar (Style Check), is an expert when it comes to style and fashion tips but this 25-year-old says, "One should use fashion trends as guidelines. If you can pull them off, do so. But make them your own. Don't just blindly follow them." Calling herself a mood dresser - because she never knows what she will end up wearing - she says she could go for a very feminine look or then, a grunge one with baggy jeans et al. "It all depends on how I am feeling at that moment." There's a hint of femininity running through her many looks. In fact, when asked to name a signature ensemble, she points to her pyjamas. "I take great pride in what I wear to bed. I don't ever dress badly," she chuckles.

Jeans and a vest are her staple outfits, especially the current rage, skinny jeans, which she says she can wear all the time. Formal occasions find her in high-waisted pants or baby doll dresses with stilettos. She hates make-up and relies on a touch of blush and mascara to keep her looking fresh. In fact, Anusha says, she is quite low-key when it comes to decking up. "I stand in front of my cupboard and waste so much time deciding what to wear that by the time I am done with my outfit and make-up, I don't have time to accessorise, so I end up throwing on whatever is at hand so long as it goes with my outfit," she says. Pointed stilettos are an indulgence. Despite stocking up on bags and shoes, she says she can't find the right handbag for her outfits.

Not a designer person, anything goes as long as it looks good on her. She enjoys picking up stuff from Miss Sixty, Top Shop and Guess? Rohit Gandhi, Rahul Khanna and Malini Ramani are among her favourite Indian designers.

Nauheed Cyrusi
Although she has now added movies to her repertoire, Nauheed Cyrusi, veejay - MTV (Mobbed) and Zee Music - is best remembered for her appearance in the Piya Basanti music video where her innocent, fresh-faced appeal made her stand out among the other pretty young things storming the small screen. Her demure on-screen persona contrasts sharply with this 24-year-old's real life personality. "Despite being a complete jeans and ganji girl, I tend to play around with my clothes so that whatever I wear ends up looking different," she says. From cutting off the backs of most of her tops to embellishing them herself, Nauheed ensures that she always keeps her style fresh and hip. "Here, I have teamed a flowing white dress with funky gold tie-up sandals as opposed to a pair of white stilettos that would have been a more obvious choice."

Barring the rare belt, Nauheed is not too fond of accessories and jewellery and insists denim is her wardrobe staple. "At any time of the day or night, you will find me in denim - mostly jeans or a skirt or shorts." Guess? is her favourite brand with Mango and Abercrombie & Fitch coming a close second. Malaysia is her fashion haunt.

Her formal attire would make heads turn. "If I have to attend a function where everyone is in saris, I would probably end up in a glitzy, sequinned dress. On the rare occasions, I do end up wearing a dress, I wet my hair and scrape it back to make it look like I oiled it. I love adding this bit of weirdness to my look." While bright hues like fuchsia, aqua and green dominate her wardrobe, Nauheed would prefer to live only in white. "For me it's not about what's in style but what makes me comfortable."
