Romancing the Stone
Published: Volume 14, Issue 7, December, 2006

Jewellery from Cartier has gone beyond the realm of ordinary ornamentation and has established itself as a collector's item. Intrinsic craftsmanship, stunning designs and fine quality stones have assured their adoring clientele a formidable place in the limelight. An eye for detail and design has always been the forte of the brand and has seen it surviving evolving trends. Louis Cartier made sure of this. Under his influence, classic styles of the late 19th century co-existed with his innovative creations. The early 20th century, saw the Cartier grandson adopt a keen interest in combining avant-garde geometric and cubist patterns with an explosion of colour.

And every stone tells a story! Romance, tragedy and mystery shroud the infamous Hope Diamond, which was set as a pendant with diamonds around it and sold to the heiress, Evelyn Walsh McLean. One theory on the origin of this mysterious blue diamond traces it to the Kollur mines at Golconda in South India. The iconic symbol of Cartier ornaments, the three-banded ring made its presence felt in 1925. Three intertwined bands of platinum, pink gold and yellow gold inspired Jean Cocteau, poet and visionary, to turn it into a cult object. The tempestuous love story of Richard Burton and Elisabeth Taylor was at its peak when the infatuated Burton bought his wife a $ 1 million Cartier diamond for her birthday. The New York Cartier workshops then worked overtime to complement this with a platinum necklace with pear shaped cut diamonds.

Nature and wildlife hold great inspiration for the trailblazing brand. Beautiful and intriguing orchids are recreated with intricate elan. The expression of absolute femininity is present in star-like brooches with petals spread wide, mesmerising floral necklaces and double rings. Platinum, gold and gemstones have been sculpted for this blossoming collection. For the wild at heart, Cartier was able to tame the beast inside its clients, with their panther collection of bejewelled ornaments and gem-studded reptilian necklaces.
