spa DIARIES
Published: Volume 14, Issue 7, December, 2006

From cream-soaked tresses to aromatic skin treatments, Mumbai salons and spas are on call to soothe, comfort and hydrate the minds and bodies of the city's harried elite

QUAN
Step into a tranquil haven and sip a refreshingly healthy smoothie at the juice bar while you take a leisurely pick from the extensive spa menu on offer. Quan, which means 'source of pure water' in Chinese, is JW Marriott's latest venture that aims at soothing the soul through a range of therapeutic rejuvenating, detoxifying, enhancing, relaxing and Indianised treatments. Walk into candlelit corridors infused with a delicate orange hue and enter your private magical land, which almost vibrates with a sense of flowing energies from the inscribed chakras on its glass doors. Bamboo and natural wood floors, pebbled details in shower areas and individual colour toned walls all form a holistic synergy that works in tandem with the treatment one chooses. Make a day out of the luxurious 'Rose and Ashwaganda Milk Bath', the 'Earth Stone Massage', the 'Radiance Facial' and the spine-tingling 'Ocean Rainshower Body Treatment'. For those on the lookout for a natural lifestyle change, try the facial and body contouring treatments (10 sessions recommended), which concentrate on firming and sculpting sagging muscles through a specific programme of machine-enabled stimulation.

JUICE
Let the buzz of lighthearted parlour banter and the whirring of a multitude of dryers welcome you as you enter Juice, Mumbai's uber fashionable hair fix station. Known for their edgy cuts and confident, trained staff who specialise in tweaking that fringed flick to perfection, the salon also offers a range of spa therapies for most scalp and tress troubles. Start with a mild hair wash and then head to a comfortable corner where your treatment can begin. Savour the sharp scented aroma of fresh peppermint as a stylist gently parts your hair into neat sections and applies this thick, liquid, rejuvenating mask. A gentle shoulder rub and arm massage and you are ensconced in hot steam so that your locks can absorb the fragrant medicine effectively. Blow dries are generally not recommended after the second, more vigorous wash and conditioning, so opt for a quick semi-dry and feel your head bursting with new vim and vigour. And if you appreciated the delicious fruity essence of the TIGI masks and shampoos, their impressive range of hair care and hair styling products in funky, neon packaging will only have you reaching for your wallet one more time.

B:blunt
Kadambari is the Kérastase ambassador at B:blunt, the stylish and bustling salon on Mumbai's Hughes Road. She leads clients out of the salon buzz and into the quiet of the ritual room - all white - the candles, the lilies, the treatment chairs and the mood. Serene. She launches gently into a personalised consultation and ticks off details on a chart. She then prepares the head and scalp with a massage technique using the products that she has selected. The long ritual leaves the scalp tingling fresh and invigorated.

In a special lounging chair, with innovative hair baths, everyday impurities are dissolved, the hair is gently cleansed and the scalp is restored to its original condition. Ceramic irons add heat to the tresses, further intensifying the effect of the special products, which are applied in sections to the hair and massaged in, helping repair the tresses and restore strength. Feel your locks visibly healthier, shinier and smooth.

Add the Kérastase ritual to your monthly agenda. Feel yourself relax to the ministration of experts and watch those tresses swing.
For a dash of shine and lustre to coloured tresses, the hair is examined and a shine-revealing bath evens and restores the hair fibre. Then a radiance-enhancing treatment masqué is applied to the locks, which smoothens the surface of the hair, resulting in velvety soft tresses with incredible mirror-like shine. Finally, a dollop of polishing cream is added that will protect the hair from harmful UV rays and pollution. Filled with a new confidence, coloured locks now display a never before seen bounce and radiance.
Address: B:blunt, Ground floor, Block no 1, 29 Hughes Road, Mumbai-400007
