Three enterprising women - Vidya Zaveri, Ameeta Shah and Nandini Mariwala - showcase their passion for beautiful things in their new signature line

It all began about six months ago over a game of bridge. Vidya Zaveri and Ameeta Shah had besides bridge, a common passion for beautiful things. So, over a game, they decided to turn their old friendship into a new partnership - Vidya and Ameeta Designs. The duo set out, scouting for artisans that would bring their dazzling creations to life. A signature line of saris and scarves began to unfold and with their first show on the horizon, they initiated a search for someone who could craft the perfect accessories to complement their collection. Enter Nandini Mariwala with her signature line of handbags.

Although Nandini is particular about promoting all things Indian, she has discovered the perfect way to blend a traditional Indonesian craft with ethnic essences. Employing women artisans in Indonesia to custom-make her cane creations, she has them detailed and finished by one of the 14 Indian families of artisans that she supports.

On a lazy Wednesday afternoon, these ladies had their first ever showing in Mumbai. The large room at Henry Thams, Mumbai's high-end restaurant, was transformed into a fair of colours and glitter as bags, jewellery, saris and scarves lent the venue with a vibrant hue. It was very clear that they were catering to a select clientele - all of whom turned up by invitation - and buy they did. After the customary air-kissing, the designers escorted their guests to the racks where they were left to lose themselves in an electric world of zardozi, crystal, feathers and fur. Ivory whites, bright reds, purples that pop and glistening golds - the colours of the day, formed the perfect contrast to the eclectic setting.

So successful was the event that come 6 p.m. they were all sold out! Vidya and Ameeta will soon embark on their next projects - a showing in Delhi followed by one in Hyderabad. Nandini on the other hand, will get down to customising an unimaginable volume of orders that has added to her already busy export schedule.
