THE GUN
This is a riverside gastro pub that dates back to the 18th century and is situated on the banks of the river Thames, in the Docklands directly across the Millennium Dome. It boasts period fireplaces, two private dining rooms and a fabulous terrace that easily seats 50 people. Scott Wade (previously at the posh Mayfair restaurant, Mirabelle) runs the kitchen, exercising his talent for cooking fresh fish from Billingsgate Market. Weekends are stylishly replete with brunches, roasts and barbecues and it's one of the few places in London where you can have barbecued lobster and steak together. There is also the occasional Jazz at the weekends in the summer. Must try: the Carpaccio of turbot with summer truffles, followed by the roasted John Dory fish served with rosti potatoes, peas, bacon and pan fried foie gras. And to complete the meal, finish up with their organic Neal's yard traditional British Isle cheese plate with quince jelly.

THE WATERWAY
Groovy retro decor and a canal-front terrace alongside Little Venice, allows you to view boats sailing back and forth making this a cool gastro pub to hang out in during the summer. The menu is deceptively simple but exquisite presentation and charming service add to the ambience of the place. It's obvious that much attention has been paid to tracking down fresh ingredients and the fine selection of Italian cheeses on offer is yet another example of this careful sourcing. The chef, James Holah, trained under Phillip Howard (at the classic French restaurant, The Square, in Mayfair) and takes his inspiration from the seasons, trying always to use what's proper and fresh. To start with, try the foie gras parfait garnished with apple chutney and hot toast. Follow it up with the grilled sea bass with fresh herbs served on a confit of new potatoes with artichokes. And finally, indulge your senses with a passion fruit cheesecake layered with a fresh mango sorbet.
The summer witnesses a trendy crowd spilling out onto the terrace, sampling cocktails and an interesting barbecue menu that makes it an unbeatable spot for hip socialising without steep prices.
