Nupur Kanoi, new designer on the fashion drawing board, has our vote

Yes, we know this spunky, slightly disorganised, forthright young lady, former stylist with Verve, rather well. We also recall mornings when we had to tip this waif from her bed, en route to early morning shoots. We forgave her only because she styled with a certain funky sense that excited us then. The Kolkata-based Nupur recently showed her first collection in Mumbai under her own label and here, with typical brevity that rivals the lengths of her skirts, she tells us about herself...

Design approach: Believe in the imperfection of the human hand - a natural, beautiful and handcrafted feel. Experimental colour combinations that range from eclectic brights to somber tones on natural fabrics. Love detail. (We appreciated that about Nupur's styling too.)

Look: Fun and bold with a folkloric edge.

Design philosophy: A wee bit of artistic disarray. (A little bit like the designer herself!)

About me: CA dropout. (Do we care?) Three long, gruelling years, in NIFT Kolkata. Two fun years as fashion stylist in Verve. Two years apprenticeship with Anamika Khanna. Finally -- 2006 - Nupur Kanoi (my label). (Congratulations!)
