Forecast 2006

Published: Volume 14, Issue 4, July-August, 2006

Styles that are stronger, bolder, darker and wilder, come fall. Last season's minimalistic tendencies may be relegated to the ignored recesses of your wardrobe, together with the sweet and the sensual. It's all about making a louder statement. Go Gothic, add a dash of OTT embellishments and a trove of delectable jewels. But remember, femininity is never out of fashion

DARKER SIDE OF BEAUTY: GORGEOUS GOTH
Toss the softer, sweeter side of you out of the window... it's time to go dark and wicked. From the House of Dior to our very own Fashion Weeks, Gothic influences were omnipresent in all ways possible. But the trick is to get this exaggeration just right, as the look is still beautiful, soft and very, very sexy.

Styling Mantras

  • Permit your chiselled body to pull off volume with gracious ease - be it skirts, dresses, tops and tunics with godets, panels, engineered flares and ballooned up hemlines. Team this volume with a pair of cigarette pants or a fitted skirt and these copious silhouettes make for très chic options for lavish soirees. Opt for deep burgundy, mauve, plum or cherry red. You can also go for eternal black or brown embellished with peacock blue and fuchsia pink.
  • For a touch of softness and sophistication in your glamorous ensemble, indulge in extravagant lace on woven silk, velvet or satin, elegantly cut and draped for gowns and skirts. Great options to go with are the Dior Gaucho bag and high voltage, stone studded cork heels.
  • Bring out the charcoal eyeliner and kohl, mascara, fake lashes and loads of attitude - and you're the Goth-goddess. Eyes heavily done with eyeshadow, lined with kohl and finished with oodles of mascara with a dash of gloss will help with the finishing touch and make you look smoking-hot.
  • For a more minimalistic but equally bold look, choose from a number of add-ons like chunky dark jewellery, diamanté glares, embellished headbands and hair accessories, fishnets, crystal studded stilettos, pointed pumps or boots in glossy PVC and oversized bags.

Go for it: Sushmita Sen, Bipasha Basu, Monikangana Dutta.
Collections: Namrata Joshipura, Rocky S, Carolina Herrera, Burberry Prosum.

BLING-A-LUSCIOUS: JUICY JEWELS
When it comes to jewellery this season, size does matter, as does colour. Luminous baubles in various hues and sizes have stormed international ramps - these funky, fun accessories are back from the '60s era.

Styling Mantras

  • Go on a shopping spree for some chunky jewellery and see if you can strike lucky with a fascinating medley of bright tones. This fabulous precious collection can be used sparingly to pump up simple attire for the day or overloaded to highlight a snazzy ensemble for the night.
  • If you are experimental enough, go for jewels in bright neon colours. Earrings, necklaces, anklets, bracelets, belts et al, in these blinding hues are very hot this season, and are must haves for the fashionista in you. Go for electric shades of blue, pink, green, orange, red and mix and match colours that contrast to create an illuminating effect.
  • Add your own personalised touch by mixing these junky jewels with your prized pieces of expensive costume jewellery or even your inherited solitaires. This will provide you with a lot of options for the day as well as the night. Team with a kaftan or shirtdress as well as kitsch embroidered kurtas and skirts.
  • For less drama, more elegance and yet to remain in sync with reigning trends, try on bolder pieces in smaller quantities, like a magnificent ring or a jewelled time piece or a cascading bunch of coloured pearls.

Go for it: Suchitra Pillai, Avanti Birla, Neha Dubey.
Collections: Manish Arora, Chopard, Forever 21, Prriya and Chintan.
