Mumbai awaits the dynamic presence of Dr Vishakha Desai, at the 16th Asian Corporate Conference in March, the keynote address of which will be delivered by Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh. Hina Oomer-Ahmed meets the first-ever woman president of the New York-based Asia Society

Here is an introduction that you'd wish was yours. For Dr Vishakha Desai is the first-ever woman president of the Asia Society. This means she is an ambassador for all regions and all aspects of Asia - its arts, culture, politics and business. The organisation, celebrating its 50th anniversary, was founded in 1956 by John D. Rockefeller III, to foster an understanding of Asia and generate communication between Americans and Asians. One of the highlight events include the launch of the Asia Society India Centre, in Mumbai, headed by Bunty Chand. Dr Desai's job comes with weighty responsibilities. Even in this lofty position of power, trust her humility to shine through like a beacon. "It does feel wonderful to be in this position but women are taking prominent positions all over the world. The most important part is to do the best you can; to reach out to people, get the message across and utilise the platform that has been provided. It is not about the ego and fame but the work you do."
