Forecast 2005 Winter

Published: Volume 13, Issue 5, September-October, 2005

Womanly curves are enhanced, Victorian style elements underlined, roses bloom in this year’s winter dressing which brings its own warmth and appeal, discarding ubiquitous layers in favour of a more refined, bootylicious form. The entire look spells pretty-girl-next-door-meets-sex-siren.

The Revival:
Edwardian Influences

Victorian and Edwardian style elements like ruffles, bows, frills, tulle, ribbons and ruching now add punch to contemporary couture. Lavish and grandiose, these trappings swing the mood from gypsy to more polished dressing.

How to

The new restrained colour palette with its sombre hues can be adapted to fit into this trendy clique. Try a basic plum shirt with billowing sleeves or bow fronts, a long velvet trumpet skirt in a rich chocolate brown and sparkling leather flat boots to do full justice to the ‘period fashion’ look.

A pair of gloves in satin, velvet or embroidered wool with fur trimmings or tie-up tassels are absolute assets for the moment as they lend a

tasteful touch and combat the winter chill on those Himalayan retreats. Try a

cutaway style with a pair of tartan trousers and boots for daywear chic or pull on an elbow length pair with a flared evening dress.A high collared top and a knee length crinoline skirt can take you from work meetings to formal evenings by adding a ruffled bolero and a few strings of pearls. For those who prefer mannish silhouettes, break the severity with feminine touches – like a shirtdress with bon bon sleeves or a silken ribbon twisted into a pretty bow around a mandarin collared jacket.

The Highlight:
Rosy Cheeks and Sparkling Eyes

Accentuate the best features of your face with rosy tones and nude shimmer – the freshly scrubbed glowing face is the new ode to beauty. Paintbox make-up is now passé.

HOW TO

Achieve the natural country look with the right shades of rouge. As opposed to last season’s strong, bronzed jaw, a dainty flushed visage is this year’s beauty mantra. Apply blush from a selection of pinkish tones and liberally stroke across the brow line to the apples of your cheeks to give an illusion of high cheekbones.

Refrain from black eyeliner or mascara. For an angelic finish, underline your eyes with a white kohl pencil and pump up your lashes with transparent mascara. Give that ‘just kissed look’ to your lips with a dab of smudged red lipstick that complements the colour on your cheeks. This low maintenance daywear look is high on aesthetic appeal.

For the evening, well-defined eyes replace the smoky eyed look. Bold eyeliner on the upper lid with just neutral shimmer as eye shadow adds the right touch of shine without looking overly made up. Sleek hair swept off the face completes this get-up.
