Singhal in New York

India continues to be the colour of the international fashion scene, as desi designers rule the catwalks, even in far-flung New York, where Payal Singhal wowed audiences with her new collection Payal Singhal with model Designer, Payal Singhal, unveiled her Spring-Summer Collection 2005 here in New York City. The show was held at the hip and trendy new desi hotspot, Earth, which boasts of interiors designed by Manish Malhotra. Singhal’s new collection reflects her own effervescence, fused with lots of energy and spunk and just the right attitude to herald the oncoming summer. Models favoured a middle-eastern inspired look with decorative beads and necklaces used as hair accessories. Shimmering ponchos and pants, funky sequin-worked salwars, rouched pants with short kurtas and ponchos that could double up as skirts, ruled the ramp. Singhal, who is married and now lives in New York City, seemws to be having a lot of fun with the eclectic New York fashion sense. "I find that New Yorkers are very open to experimenting with a variety of fashions, everyone interprets clothes differently and they bring their own individualistic style to every piece, which is very exciting for me as a designer," she says. – Hina Oomer-Ahmed in New York.
