Even as designers were criticised for displaying uncertain selling skills; celebrities and social butterflies for partying; shows for never being on time; visiting buyers, many of whom had come here merely to reconnoitre, at their own admission, were made into mini gods.
Lakme India Fashion Week (LIFW), which showcases Indian designers and their work with the objective of generating local and international business, has often been berated as a carnival with little purpose. Give the guys a chance, says Shirin Mehta and enjoy its fledgling state as perhaps history in the making
Every April, these past six years, has become Lakme India Fashion Week (LIFW) lambasting month. You could almost ‘celebrate’ it to the day. The press, the paparazzi, rush helter-skelter to the venue, wires dangling, somewhat uncaring of tripping up designers and spectators alike. They hound the famous, the nearly-famous and the to-be-famous, and then, they, with immense clarity of thought and focus, give a dressing down to everyone and everything they encounter, dismissing it all as mere dreck. And, are there any takers? Certainly, in all those killjoys who would upbraid the unfurling of all that is modish and polished. The tendency remains to take fashion and all that is fashionable, not too seriously; while in actual fact, this is hard work and the business of fashion, a serious enterprise.
So, the seven days that showcase Indian designers and their work, with the objective of generating local and international business, is berated as a carnival with little purpose. We say, give the guys a chance. Give our fledgling prêt industry the opportunity to grow up and be noticed. Treat the event, instead, as an adventure into the realms of design and innovation. Think of it as that gourmet dish that grows finer with each making, revealing nuances that unexpectedly crop up. Liken it to a roller coaster of the senses that unwinds the unexpected with the usual loops and turns. Enjoy its fledgling state as perhaps history in the making and stop the carping, for button’s sake!
