Forecast 2005 Monsoon
Published: Volume 13, Issue 3, May-June, 2005

The much awaited monsoon will bring with it a downpour of wildly matched prints along with playful knotted weaves. Coupled with jangling bangles and a nonchalant assortment of piled up separates, this trendy lot will surely have the rain gods smiling down on you...

THE MIX ’N’ MATCH: PRINT FUSION

Pamper your feminine side with an array of prints. Exotic animal, feminine florals, African safari, ethnic batiks and soft spriggy prints blend with each other to create a stunningly opulent look.

HOW TO

Just forget the overdone and conventional mix of solids with prints. You would be amazed at how well contrasting prints complement each other – checks with rosy impressions, plaids with graphics, stripes with bird motifs. Be striking in a classic leopard print sari and a floral blouse in varied shades. For those who are not very fond of animal prints, try this combination the other way round. A great alternative western ensemble are designer Nasha’s flimsy georgette animal print dresses lined with bold floral lining. The juxtaposition of ladylike patterns with masculine stripes and checks is a sure shot winner. Combine an oriental motif, gypsy chiffon dress with a minuscule satin, checkered shrug. Dare to differ in a block-printed kurta mixed with cotton lycra leggings or a chiffon churidaar in abstract prints. Put on striped wedge heels to set you apart.

Gucci’s spring-summer collection of delicious floral printed bags bring brightness to otherwise wet days. Sling on one of these tempting eye-catchers. Carry printed bags with printed separates.

THE CONTRADICTION: PILE IT UP

Standing out as a winning rebel to light June dressing, this trend demands beautifying every inch of you. Be the cynosure of all eyes with daring separates and accessories, put together almost impulsively.

HOW TO

Layering steps forward as overdoing conjures up a lot of takers this season. It literally means pile up, at a stretch, as much as you love from your wardrobe – be it patchwork stoles, net stockings or cottony boxer jackets.

An informal cocktail evening gives you the chance to add plenty of detailing to your silhouette. A pair of printed crêpe harem pants would gel well with Swarovski embroidered jersey vests. Don two of them in contrasting colours, one peeping out from the other. Go for a pair of sparkling flat boots and decorate your feet with a few of your favourite anklets strung over your shoes. Adorn your wrists with a mix of bracelets, handcuffs, bangles or even cut-away biker gloves. Innovatively, wrap a vibrant, crinkled cotton, narrow scarf with a gold trimming as a turban. A coloured tattoo would jazz you up to the hilt.

You can play safe by restricting this look to your accessories. Decorate your tresses with an assorted jumble of hair clips, create an empire waist with a multitude of metallic belts, or carry a large haversack with a miniature satchel slung on the strap.

THE WEAVE: KNOTTY KNITS

Witness the revival of handicrafts in a big way this season. Make way for crochet and knits in your wardrobe, but remember to splash with lots of colour!

HOW TO

Enliven your attire with knits in crayon colours like zigzags and candy stripes. Sport a flaming red or flashy violet twin-set crochet bikini, for a refreshing dip when the rains fail to combat the heat. Or go carefree with a fluorescent braided bra-top peeping out from a scoop neck knit tee.

A bright multi-hued threaded scarf with colourful bands running through it could pep up any outfit – go for an ultra narrow scarf.

Knit accessories – belts and wristbands, are stylish too. Welcome a cool drizzle fashionably with an elasticized knotted floppy cap in an electric hue – although a fluorescent umbrella would help too!

Set a trend in a jersey knit or crochet top resembling a short girlie dress (most likely found in hip Hong Kong retail stores). Team it up with slim fit capris or bermudas. Roman sandals with tie-ups would look snazzy. For variation, a trapeze cut top in a promisingly smart combination of red, white and blue looks laid-back and cute too.

Men’s fashion is leaning towards a happy-go-lucky mode. Coax your man into pairing up a lightweight collared rib in a fresh peach with a suave beige suit.

THE WRIST FACTOR: BANGLE BABIES

Welcome the ’80s styling with bright and bold jewellery. Vying for your attention are chunky, wide bangles. Pile them high up your arm to bring out a bit of both, fun and eccentricity.

HOW TO

Put together a nonchalant, mismatched look by mixing bangles of all sorts of shapes and sizes. The bigger, the funkier. Polka dotted, multi striped, floral printed and bright coloured bangles are what you should be splurging on. Animal inspired patterns – zebra, leopard, python vow to be a rage with party hoppers.

Slip on a pair of ultra-loose, khaki linen pants (an adaptation of nautical dressing) and team them up with a bright green racer back t-shirt. Cover up both your wrists with vibrant bangles in shades of hot pink, lemon yellow, pea-green. Be all authentic with some thick workman’s rope in earthy tones around your waist.

Alternate with chunky beaded necklaces around your wrist. This hippie chic get up is guaranteed to make heads turn.

If big bangles don’t sound enticing, just pick up thin rubber ones in a blaze of neon or try some minakari glass chudis. Do not keep a count, just add on as many as you can. They go superbly with faded denims.

Glamorize your evening attire with large metallic bangles. If you often end up resorting to a little black dress as your last minute outfit, accessorize elegantly with these wrist charmers. Gold is the metal of the moment. Beiges and whites with gold personify classic panache.

So do not hesitate to stack up those bangles right upto your elbow.
