Verve's best dressed list
Published: Volume 13, Issue 3, May-June, 2005

Fashion statements of a silver screen goddess. The contemporary chic of an evergreen model. Trendsetting styles of television divas. Presenting Verve’s annual best dressed list.

Simone Singh

The Elegant Charmer

With the natural grace of a ballerina, Simone Singh personifies dramatic elegance. Not one to follow fads, the timeless charm of Audrey Hepburn appeals to her sensibilities. She stole our hearts with her plain Jane look in the long running serial, Heena and now she sizzles as the poised host of Kosmic Chat with Sunita Menon.

Picking different individual pieces to put together her own look, she lends a touch of glamour and irreverence to every outfit. A classic from another era, a fabulous 1920’s flapper girl dress from designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed, has been a recent addition to her diverse creative wardrobe. Manish Malhotra’s layered shimmering creations entice her. Wendell Rodricks, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Manish Arora are equal favourites.

Always dressed to stand apart, Simone says, "I just hate the cliched term Indo-western." She would prefer combining a long tunic with shredded jeans to add a unique Indian touch to a western ensemble. Having mastered her own style, dressing up comes very easily to her. "I am ready in 15 minutes flat." Her exquisite pieces of jewellery come from varied travels. An Italian cameo from Florence finds place with a custom made pair of earrings from her family jeweller.

Memorable Moment: At the Valentino show in Mumbai, she sported a very Chanelesque look with a tweed jacket and a white rose corsage paired with faded denims. With assorted strings of pearls around her neck, she stood out in a patented Simone Singh look.

Kamal Sidhu

The Dynamic Diva

Kamal is ‘the original’ style icon. With her svelte frame and lovely curls she is glamour at its best. This is one lady who is constantly on the move. Having hosted an eco-adventure travel show, living out of suitcases has acquainted her with stylising comfort. "Fashion for me is fun, fantasy and always good for some comic relief," says this modish dresser.

Not one to have a prejudice even in fashion, Kamal likes to globalise her look by mixing up Indian and western clothes. She can go on with the list of her favourite designers, one name inspiring the other – Anamika Khanna, Hemant Trevedi, Azeem Khan, Prada, Galliano, Gaultier, Tom Ford, Paul Ropp. However, she balances her penchant for designer wear with interesting individual pieces that catch her eye. Having missed out on the LIFW buzz this time, she hopes to view the collections next year.

Kamal is a regular flea market scout. She is enthralled by the originality and the surprise element that they throw up. "It would be great to see beautiful, vibrant markets cropping up in the corners of Mumbai." She is fascinated by the element of design in everything, including art, music, cars, spaceships and fashion accessories. "I have my fair share of shoes, bags, jewellery and hats, but not an obscene amount." Watch out for a daring style change coming through in her character for an exciting new show for Discovery Channel.

Memorable Moment: Comfort is what matters to her the most. So we were not surprised when she turned up for Verve’s exclusive luncheon for Louis Vuitton in a chic summery outfit. Kamal looked cool in an all-white ensemble – a long see-through chikan tunic worn over bootcut trousers. A delicate stone necklace and a silver clutch added oomph to the outfit.
