As beauty becomes personality oriented, it is time for the real you to shine forth.

to the look this season is wholesome and pure with a daring touch of drama
Stay cool with comfy curls and a soft, wind-kissed look

Every summer, make-up goes light, breezy and fresh – and this year is no different. At the just concluded Lakme India Fashion Week (LIFW) the look was clean and pretty, though there were hints of the dramatic. Clint Fernandes, one of the official make-up artists at LIFW says, "Like fashion, beauty is becoming very personality-oriented." This means make-up bags can stay light and there is no need to clutter the dressing table with a profusion of products.

Eyes

Striking and edgy

Eyes are taking centre stage. Most designers played up the eyes and left the lips more soft and subtle. From Malini Ramani to JJ Valaya, they all opted for a look that was heavy with black kohl. Says Fernandes, "There were lots of fake, over-exaggerated, coloured eye lashes at LIFW. But this is not something that should be used off the catwalk. Instead, use a lengthening mascara." According to him, mascara is a must-have for any woman – it opens and lifts the eyes resulting in a fresher look. Among his favourites are L’Oréal, Lancôme and Shiseido. If you want a high fashion look, then try a coloured mascara – purple can be dramatic and edgy.

Hair

‘Hair’ to stay

The big story at LIFW, as far as beauty trends go, was hair. It’s time to say good-bye to rebonding and hair straighteners. Curls are back in a huge way. With nearly every designer displaying curls, the look that Varun Bahl put on the ramp found favour with many. When you are curling, think soft – not a glam doll look but an easy, free flowing look, very Romanesque, slightly rumpled and not too defined. Young designer, Nandita Basu, had all her models’ hair completely backcombed and put up. To give your face a longer and leaner look, just gently tease the hair with a comb around the crown. At Rajesh Pratap Singh’s show, the Indian schoolgirl look was reinvented for the ramp. Hair was casually bunched up into two ponytails. The key to the look this year is completely natural.
