VERVE Top 5
Photographs by Monica Jain
Published: Volume 13, Issue 3, May-June, 2005

The top five shows were selected for various reasons and criteria – the common thread being each show’s high appeal to the individual consumer. While one designer created an awe-inspiring drama, another displayed immense clarity of thought with a thematic line. One returned to his extraordinary forte after a long-awaited spell, while others presented highly marketable collections for the first and countless time respectively. A look at those who made LIFW a delicious treat to watch.

KIRAN UTTAM GHOSH - RETRO CHARM

True to her theme, was Kiran Uttam Ghosh. Backtracking in time to the 1920s when flapper dresses, short, kiss-curled locks and jewelled cigarette holders held court; when Jazz became the spirit of life. With her distinctive Indianised touch, our favourite Kolkattan made a bygone era come alive again…

MONISHA JAISING - ETHNIC FLURRY

She almost never gets it wrong, and yet again, Monisha Jaising grabbed the pulse of the fashion conscious and got it beating to her groovy blend of traditional Indian prints on fur-collared dresses. A sure sell-out, as always.

ROHIT BAL - ETHEREAL TOUCH

The prodigal returned and how the audience cheered! Returning to women’s wear after a long hiatus, Rohit Bal’s sublime collection of mokaish outfits speaking volumes of his love for Kashmir simply took our breath away. A celebration of the first snowfall, like he aptly put it.
