Subtropical forests, buttercup meadows and sand that tickles your feet as you seek solace by the sea. Globetrotter, Bandana Tewari, forgoes leaving the country on a jet plane and courts serendipity in her own backyard, so to speak

DESERT MAGIC
Sam and Khuri – Jaisalmer
Still reminiscing about Lawrence of Arabia as he traversed the golden dunes of the Sahara? Good news – you don’t need to cross a continent to experience the desert magic. Sam and Khuri in Jaisalmer, with their stretches of rolling sand dunes, mesmerising sunsets and soft sand that tickles your feet as you walk towards the horizon, is where you can taste nirvana, even if you don’t deserve it. Camel safari is the best option though rolling with wanton abandon on the sandy dunes, still warrants inexplicable pleasure.
Travel tip: Cross the dunes under a full moon with the enchanting desert tunes of the Manganiyar and Langa musicians. It’s primal and haunting, calling for intense introspection about why you still want to run back to your busier-than-a-bee city lifestyle.
Best way to get there: Nearest airport: Jodhpur (308 kms). Delhi/Mumbai to Jodhpur: daily flights. By road: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer: 6/7 hour drive (400 kms). By rail: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer: 2 overnight trains.

ISLAND ADVENTURE
Kadmat Island – Lakshadweep
Like our memory, the shoreline is endless. Ask the scuba-divers who run a regular course there; they will tell you, Kadmat Island is enough to drive you to spiritual euphoria. Tranquil and rustic, the ebb and fall of waves that create a wonderfully relentless lull, are but a microcosm of our existence. Referred to as the Garden of Eden by locals, it is a delightful abode of some exotic species. The best way to enjoy this is to dive and swim alongside the spectacular marine flora and fauna. Be prepared. If you are the chosen one, you may even chance upon a shark!
Travel tip: It’s just one of those trips where nature beckons you to find solace by the sea. Begin by reading Secrets of Eternity, a book of poems compiled from writings by divers gripped by their experiences at Kadmat Island.
Best way to get there: Delhi/Mumbai to Kochi: daily flights.
Kochi to Agatti: daily flights (except on Sundays). Agatti to Kadmat Island: a 6-hour boat ride.
