That pout could give Angelina Jolie a run for her money and her sinewy frame has been ruling the ramp. This law-student-turned-model has a brazen fashion sense that swivels heads in her direction. The funky Joey Matthew has developed an original style, distinguishing herself from the rest of the runway brigade.

Matthew has found a comfort zone in the world of all that is unconventional. Right from her six-foot frame to her idiosyncratic outfits, she breaks the mould. Giant kimono sleeves, beaded tops or tweed churidars, the model with the mostest is always avant garde. She experiments with silhouettes and is all for ‘edgy, uptown London fashion’. Topshop, Diesel Style Lab and Miss Sixty are regular stops, where she picks up everyday wear. (We adore her billowing, harem-style jeans, typical of her inhibited approach to dressing.) When she feels like a splurge, it’s Josephs, for clean, unique cuts. At home, Manish Arora continues to be the absolute favourite, catering to her offbeat preferences.

With the sweltering summer heat, Matthew is mostly in powder blues and whites. For the nights, she spices things up with super-short dresses and skirts with a burst of red or hot pink. Her wardrobe has taken a turn for the feminine and the statuesque model can be found at all the hotspots wearing soft, layered outfits, with a bit of frill, gathers or ruffles – clothes that make her ‘feel like a woman’. Averse to strictly Indian outfits, Matthew would rather slip into light cotton skirts with Indian prints, than go all out desi. She favours designers like Aparna J. Wangdi who add a modern twist to ethnic wear. With the exception of weddings, when she’ll glam up in a silk, South Indian, Kanjeevaram sari.

Having rid herself of her trademark white vintage Chanel sunglasses, Matthew has acquired her first pair of Gucci shades. “Earlier there was no exclusivity with Gucci.” Adding accessories bought in the flea markets of Goa and others from Italy and Spain, she loves trying out different combinations.

The ultimate trendsetter, Matthew is comfortable in whatever she puts on, carrying off the wackiest ensembles without a flinch. Inadvertent fashion statements and quirky improvisations make this lady sizzle with individuality.
