2003 - The Year in Fashion

Combat and corsets, black, white, and belts galore. Verve looks back at 2003 and catches the trends that dominated. Military Cargoes made a comeback, and how! Buckles and pockets were the new style mantra and before long everyone was seen strutting about town in the latest military gear. T-shirts New fad or feud?! The T-shirt created an uproar in the fashion world as much for controversy as for couture. Stripes Horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, thick or thin -- stripes had their fifteen minutes of fame. A touch of sequins or eye-catching accessories made for a lasting style statement. Corsets With itsy bitsy waists and daring cleavage, women paired the must-have corset with everything from denims to crushed skirts. Manish Arora's lace lined corsets seemed to be the popular pick for the crème of Indian society. Black and White Black and white are perennial favourites, but 2003 saw the classic colours get top billing in the haute couture marquee. The conservative mixed with the daring as traditional jacket and trousers shared the spotlight with dresses cut up to there and wild zebra prints. 'Phoren' Labels Society queens clung to these men with brash abandon. John Galliano, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford got top priority as husbands came a close second. Designer clothes, shoes, bags and sunglasses were flaunted at every opportunity, and limited edition Louis Vuittons rubbed shoulders with the latest Gucci glares and Versace jeans. Belts The finishing touch to any outfit was the belt. They were everywhere. (And frankly, we at Verve are quite tired of them!) Shells, beads, fringe, chains, you name it, it had been worn. Flowers The fashion scene was in bloom. Corsages, floral prints and accessories were quite a rage. It was a colourful paradise, with bright colours and bold prints, and everyone intended to be a part of this Garden of Eden. Monisha Jaising Fashion's golden girl. Her clothes flew off the rack after India Fashion Week, and there were demands for more. First it was the kurti, now the tie-up baseball T-shirts. Everyone just had to own a Monisha Jaising creation. She had the fashion world abuzz, and Jaising's wearable line had shoppers scrambling for every last piece. Sabyasachi Mukherjee The new whiz kid of Indian fashion, Sabyasachi Mukherjee wowed once again with his 'Kora' Collection at India Fashion Week. After Sabyasachi's debut show at the Delhi Fashion Week, his latest offering was awaited with much anitcipation.His unconventional finale with model Bhawna Sharma as a pregnant woman turned heads, and now moving on to Bollywood, this designer is only getting bigger.
