This much-hyped region of Mumbai hit the headlines recently with the ‘Celebrate Bandra’ festival that sung an ode to an undying spirit that pervades its lanes and bylanes. Verve does a quick roll call of some uptown ‘boys’who make Bandra appear larger than life
Jackie Shroff

From a humble abode at Teenbatti in central Mumbai, to a swanky apartment in a high-rise building in Bandra, his shift of address is part of the region’s well-documented history. Macho model-turned actor, Shroff, is a hero with a heart of gold in real life too, giving a willing, helping hand to needy street urchins and spot boys. Shroff would not dream of living anywhere else: "Bandra is a great place to be in," he says. "There is so much happening with amphitheatres, cafés, the promenade…. The people are extremely peaceful and harmonious here. No matter what trouble occurs elsewhere, like when the riots erupted, our area remains quiet. Touch wood."

Sachin Tendulkar

One of Bandra’s most celebrated boys, Tendulkar is a formidable force in the world of cricket. The Little Master Blaster may have fine-tuned his technique and instincts at Shivaji Park, in Central Mumbai, but it is in the queen of suburbs where he lives. The Tendulkars changed residence a while ago, from one side of Bandra to the other. He’s now closer to a sea view!

Shah Rukh Khan

A seamless transition from idiot box to big screen heralded the start of his more than a decade innings in Bollywood, in which the Khan has defied stereotyping by assaying a variety of roles with elan. Today, King Khan, with his luscious lips, bedroom eyes and bounding gait, is one of the most saleable stars who continues to lord it over the marquee and moviegoers’ hearts. SRK’s larger-than-life persona is underscored by Mannat, his heritage mansion by-the-sea at Bandstand.

Aamir Khan

Chocolate-faced romantic in the tragic tale, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Rangeela’s rough tapori, mission-driven Bhuvan in the Oscar-nominated Lagaan, this Raja Hindustani has his roots in good ole Bandra. Actor, chiselled to perfection, Aamir Khan, was in the news just a little while ago again, as he stepped in front of the camera, flowing tresses et al, for Ketan Mehta’s The Rising. The consummate actor has come a long way from his debutant days, yet he still lives in the familiar environs he has grown up in. In a recent, exclusive interview to Verve, Aamir had confided, "It’s here that I lost my reserve, took charge heading our building youngsters’ Time Pass Club; I organised fairs, events…"

Karan Johar

Undoubtedly the flavour of the moment, with Kal Ho Naa Ho making the box office break into a jig, Johar’s signature song and dance extravaganzas (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham) boast a faithful fan following. Recent resident of Bandra – he’s moved here just a few years ago – the producer-director swears completely by the bustling suburb: "I go by the energies of a place and I love the vibes Bandra gives out, almost erasing my memories of the previous 27 years in South Mumbai. It is like a small self-sufficient city on its own. There are many upcoming people here who want to achieve something. It is almost like a miniature Manhattan, cool and upbeat. There’s great entertainment here, my favourite restaurant is next door and, of course, I have my work."

John Abraham

Current flame of sexy siren, Bipasha Basu, Abraham lives in the same area. In an industry dotted with Khans, this actor bring in a whiff of fresh air, with, if nothing else, but his name. Erstwhile media planner and face of Provogue, Abraham sashayed into moviedom with Jism…and with a few ‘little’ films in his kitty, Abraham is here to stay.
