LOOK — LADYLIKE DRESSING

Unabashed femininity, in all its forms, is the fresh vision for the year. Silhouettes are streamlined, slim, exaggerated and oozing confidence. This look can span from vulnerable girlie to sophisticated diva.

How to: Think Jackie Onassis. Think Lady Di. Think ’40s twin sets with skirts skimming the knees and showing off the calves. Think very proper handbags primly hung at the elbow. Now, twist this into an Indian context with matched brocade pantsuit, jamewar skirt suit, empire line dresses in matka silk.

For saris, think large floral prints. Think soft, think sheer. Embroidery, if any, should be gentle. Brocade borders and cholis are de rigueur.

Now, add rows of faux diamonds (real, will do too!), chains of gold and go out and parade in all your pearls — wear them all together, if you choose. Go OTT (over the top). We say ‘Bare your baubles and flaunt them’.

Strappy, satin ribboned stilettos, in delicious sugary colours such as lavender, rose and cherry, do the trick. Remember tiny handbags are a rule for evenings.

To easily achieve this look, keep some sultry pieces in chiffon and lace handy. You can layer these under anything.

Go for it: Malaika Arora, Sharmila Tagore, Farah Oomerbhoy.

Collections: Satya Paul, Anamika Khanna, Gucci, Christian Dior.
