BBC viewers in the UK are familiar with Navdip Dhariwal’s charm and distinctive presenting style. Reporting and presenting programmes, she has covered diverse ground over the years – from hot political issues to the infamous scene of Michael Jackson dangling his baby from a hotel window.

In her new assignment, Dhariwal’s editorial agenda will reflect "the rapidly changing face of India". The issues will be diverse, ranging from the burgeoning AIDS epidemic to the consequences of the ‘War on Terror’, juxtaposed with reports on emerging trends in films, fashion and music.

Dhariwal had her first brush with media while studying law at university in Bristol – she presented a show on a black dance music radio station. "It was the best introduction to broadcasting I could have had," she remembers, "full of spirit and passion, not to mention the exposure to a diverse range of people and experiences."

The work ethic came early to Dhariwal, who grew up in Southall, one of four children in a Sikh family that immigrated to Britain. "We were brought up with traditional values – respect for people, self-discipline, the importance of family and the need to work hard."

It all paid off. "While at school, I got a job serving coffee at Heathrow Airport," she says. "I can’t believe I now jet around the globe paying for expensive coffee at airport terminals. Having been on the other side makes you appreciate life much more."

And she’s excited about her new assignment. "I am naturally very keen to know more about my mother country." Now, that’s good news!
