When you think festive make-up, think extreme. This season, the dominant trend that emerges sees two distinct looks – dramatic, in-your-face make-up ranging from sooty eyes to vibrant colours and the contrasting but perennially fashionable natural look

BUT NATURALLY: For the nude look, stick to flesh coloured tones. Foundation should be translucent or don’t use any at all. To avoid looking too washed out, make-up artist, Clint Fernandes, suggests using hues like apricot on your lips. He also says that pink is the new ‘it’ colour, so try variations of this shade in your blush and lipstick. A rosy blush gives that ‘I just got back from the gym’ flush to your cheeks. Add some definition to the eyes with a brown liner. Try using a bit of vaseline over your eyeshadow to get rid of the powdery feel. Dewy lips with a hint of shine are a perfect touch. The key is to look like you haven’t used make-up at all.

We recommend: L’Oreal Colour Juice lip gloss in Pink Potion. L’Oreal AirWear liquid foundation with SPF 14

SMOULDERING STARES: Bring out your inner drama queen with the wave of a mascara wand. Follow these simple tips and you’ll be the centre of attention in no time. For the ‘smoky’ look, line your lids with a kohl pencil and then gently blend around the eyes with your finger. For a sultrier feel, line the insides of your eyes as well. Experiment and try adding a flick at the ends of your eyes for a sixties-inspired Mod look. Use a sheer gloss or a light, peachy lipstick. Finish with thick black, even clumpy mascara to lengthen your lashes.

We recommend: L’Oreal Eye Smoker in Noir. Maybelline Volum Express waterproof mascara

PURPLE HAZE: For a big Diwali dinner, switch to a violet eyeshadow instead of black and lightly smudge above and below your eyes. The rest of your make-up should be minimal, in order to let your eyes stand out. For the lips, stick to natural tones with a creamy texture and add a dab of shimmer to give yourself a lip-smacking pout.

We recommend: Chambor trio eyeshadow in Dazzling Ultraviolet.

SCARLET FEVER: For those who prefer to play up their mouth, noted make-up artist, Cory Walia, says that deep red lips are making a comeback. Lay off the sheen and pick a matte shade. To complement your scarlet mouth, keep the rest of your make-up very basic. Use a grey or brown shadow on the eyes, add a touch of blush and get ready to stop traffic. To spice things up a bit for a night out, dust on a silvery eyeshadow or any other metallic shade.

We recommend: Lakme vitamin enriched lipstick in Evita Red. Chambor trio eyeshadow in Dazzling Sphinx.
