At this point in my career, I would be delighted to do a role where people would relate to the real ‘me’

For almost two decades, her stage shows have electrified audiences the world over. Crooner Suneeta Rao reinvents herself to reach out to international audiences with her new fusion fare.

If all the world’s a stage, then Suneeta Rao claims that she was born to be on it. From the glitz of Mumbai to the dazzle of New York and St. Petersburg, her electrifying live shows have kept her fans on edge for almost two decades. But this ‘Pari’ is in no hurry to bow out. Just four solo albums old, covering a varied genre of music such as disco, pop, rock, film and folk, Rao is all set to stake her claim to the title of the original ‘Indian pop princess’ with her yet to be released pop album.

Although she is stubbornly tightlipped about the new project, she does promise us a new fusion fare with a lounge feel, which “reaches out to a universal audience”. Singer and dancer, theatre actress and columnist...can films be far behind? “Not really,” she smiles, “though at this point in my career, I would be delighted to do a role where people I know, would relate to the real ‘me’.”

A self-confessed expressionist, her need to communicate, travel, meet “all sorts of interesting people” and get her word out, has ensured her a fair amount of press exposure during the album breaks. For Suneeta Rao, ‘live’ still remains her first ‘love’ followed by videos and musical theatre. An ideal plan for the near future would be to set the stage of large venues on fire, complete with a fusion band, back up singers and the entire palooza

And yes, her last croon does sound like “I’m not done yet!”
