Say supermodel and you think Milind Soman. This national swimmer turned model, turned actor, turned producer first hit the scene when he was 24 years old, in a Thackersey Fabrics ad campaign. I realised there was money to be made in modelling and decided to make a go of it. He has never looked back. On TV, he appeared in Indias first English soap, A Mouthful of Sky and made his film debut a couple of years ago. Despite being called a wooden actor, Soman believes films are where his future lies and he has even turned producer with his first offering Pyar Ka Superhit Formula which releases later this year. Of course, he has a lead role in the film, which also stars Tanuja and model Namrata Baruwa who makes her film debut.
Ramp? I love to do shows. Ramp modelling has a great sense of camaraderie. All the models travel together and you become like one family. I walked down the ramp earlier this year for a khadi promotion show. I feel now, after 15 years in the business, there needs to be some reason for me to walk down the ramp.
Fashion week? I have never taken part in any Indian fashion week and do not feel I have missed anything. By the time fashion week began here, I had already moved into films.
The big screen? I will not sign a film unless I feel connected to it. I like working with new directors and producers as it makes for a fresh and interesting project. I started my own company, E-motion Pictures, as I did not like the sort of films being made. Its not about making big money. For me, its about making a film you are proud of.
The idiot box? Doing A Mouthful of Sky, was great exposure, no matter what anyone says. People watch serials and television is a very powerful medium.
Bollywood fashion? Actors want to project their own look in films and not that of their characters, which means that there is no depth in the way they dress.
Personal style? I am most comfortable in jeans and a T-shirt. I do not think too much about clothes. Dressing fashionable is not a priority for me.
Fav designers? As a ramp model, I really liked working with Rohit Bal and Suneet Varma. They both have a very strong sense of style.
Men in fashion? Women are more important as fashion is mostly bought by women. So I guess, more attention is paid to them. But now men too are being promoted in the business.
Women? I am single right now. There is nothing I do not like about women. I love everything about them. Maybe that comes from the fact that I have three sisters. I do find I am attracted to talented women. Talent in anyone fascinates me.
