THE HOPE FACTORY
Lavanya Sankaran
Hachette India

You know youíre in for a good read when the characters start telling you their own stories, beyond the written word that you are perusing. With The Hope Factory, Lavanya Sankaran has managed precisely that Ė you start forming your own ideas about what is driving each of them. The story begins with Anand Murthy in his office and steadily unfolds unto a scene of bureaucracy. The next chapter introduces Kamala, his maid, whose existence revolves around her son, while both their lives depend on the whims and fancies of Anandís wife, Vidya. It is a promising premise, and Lavanya doesnít disappoint. She deftly shifts landscapes to focus on Anandís teething problems in New India, Kamalaís worries for her wayward son with a golden heart and Vidyaís increasingly impulsive behaviour.
