Stephen Forsey – noted watchmaker and founder of the luxe horological brand Greubel Forsey – on entering the Indian market, his favourites and the pursuit of new ideas that respect tradition

How it all started
My grandfather was an engineer – he was a car enthusiast. He first worked in the automotive industry and then in the aerospace industry. My father was also a fan of classic cars. I grew up with a passion for mechanics. Around the ’80s, when the economy in England was dipping, I came across a family friend who repaired and restored watches and clocks. This fascinated me and I realised that I had to learn watch-making. I was very lucky that my parents supported me in this adventure. They found a school that I could attend in London.

On winning numerous awards and accolades over the years
Robert Greubel and I met in the ’90s – we immediately understood that we shared the same vision about watch-making. Since the beginning of our adventure, our philosophy was, and still is, entirely dedicated to research and innovation, discovery and the pursuit of new ideas that respect tradition. Since 2004 – when we presented our first timepiece, the Double Tourbillon 30° – our manufacture is in continuous evolution.

Our goal is to continue improving timekeeping performances. In our EWT (Experimental Watch Department) we work on new inventions which, of course, take time to be tested and validated and those will equip our watches in the near future.

What we put on the market must be perfect both in technique and in aesthetics. We are proud of all the awards we have won. We are very honoured as all these prizes are a significant recognition for our young company and push us to continue to doing better.

Coming to India
India is a wonderful country and I came here last September. I received a very warm welcome. We started introducing our brand very recently into this market. India is a developing market with a great potential and attention to the universe of high end horology, to art and culture. There are a number of connoisseurs and collectors who appreciate and understand the authentic and prestigious art of watch making in this country. We are happy to have had the opportunity of presenting them our brand and products that can meet their exigencies. Greubel Forsey produces about 100 pieces a year that are distributed in selective points of sales worldwide. We are very honoured to be present in this market also.

Personal favourite
All the watches of our collection are my favourite timepieces; they are like ‘sons’. It’s difficult and impossible to make a choice.

Passions other than time-keeping
Ancient cars, of course!

Value of time
The value of time is to find time to do the million things you would like to do!

Personally, the three things while selecting a watch for yourself
Original design, reliable mechanics and excellent finishing.
