Big is beautiful this winter

The Bulk

Add muscle to your arms and lift some weights. For sleeves, the bulkier, the better this season. Leg-o-mutton, lantern, kimono, dolman, bishop and the other bigwigs are dominating the runways. Heavyweight fabrics like tweed, chunky knits, felt, fleece, mohair, angora, houndstooth and highland plaids form a protective cocoon and trap air to keep you warm. Pre- 1960s tailoring makes a big impact with large overcoats and jackets. Early grunge from the late ‘80s emerges in its new avatar as bulky sweaters and oversized tops. The trend does not stop at outerwear; it can also be seen in softly tailored, feminine blouses, shirts and dresses. Store many tricks up your sleeves this season.

Mad Women

Things have gone a bit ‘off the rails’. After months of sporting uncluttered neo-minimalist fare and crisp old-school tailoring, we now take a U-turn and speed into la-la-land. Here, the sartorial sensibilities are on acid. ‘Graphic’ is a polite term; sometimes, the colours, prints and teaming-ups are more towards borderline assaulting. Psychedelia, tribal fare, animal spots, paint wars, stars and galaxies, graffiti – everything goes with everything. Patterned underlayers, pop overlayers, vivid sandwich layers – there are no golden rules, just golden…and silver, and anything in between. And if you still think that head to toe ‘art’ is minimalist, then throw on some fox/mink/sable to ‘lift’ the look.
